monday 9/29/14 All citytech classes

I'm extremely sick, so classes are cancelled today.  basically this just means we'll push everything back one class.  on weds- Intro will have it's exam and child psych will have its review.  Personnel  - we will meet next week like regular.

Textbooks: we will discuss them more in class, but come to the first class before you purchase them so that we can be clear on editions, sharing etc.

IN ADDITION to what you studied for the essay questions, you may want to look up some of the following stuff:

Human Development Chap
Piagets theory, and schemas, accommodation and assimilation.
Attachment (everything, but you should have this already from your essay)
self concept and self esteem
Freuds theory of development
Eriksons theory of development (most of it is what it sounds like)
teratogens




Learning Chap
Classical conditioning and all its components
Operant conditioning, reinforcement, punishment and schedules of reinforcement
Overview of observational learning, Bandura.


Memory Chap
Recall and recognition
encoding (with types), storage, retrieval
maintenance and elaborative rehearsal
episodic, procedural and sematic memory
iconic/echoic memory (literally whats in the slide about it is fine)
Short and long term memory

Developmental Questions

DUE 5/15

Write 3 separate essays 1- 1 & 1/2 pages long about any topic on the following chapters:

one essay each on chapter 11, 13, and 15.

This is a very open ended assignment, just pick the things that interest you from those chapters and give me a good essay about it.  Ill take them handwritten, or typed.

- familiarize yourself with both memory and language development.

Chapter 8

-Initiative vs Guilt
- Understanding the self and others
- emotions that pop up in this stage/self conscious emotions
- understanding and regulating emotions
- Morality- you need to know morality for both this chapter as well as Kohlberg in chapter 10
-Be familiar with the gender information
- birth order
- play

Chapter 9

-       brain development
-       Motor development
-       Disabilities and ADHD
-       Piaget’s concrete operational stage
-       Creativity
-       Intelligence- this is like half the chapter so it will be on the examJ

Chapter 10

-       Development of the self in Middle and late childhood
-       Industry vs inferiority
-       Emotional understanding changes and empathy
-       Kohlberg’s Moral Stages
-       Prosocial behavior
-       Moral personality
-       Peer changes, status, social cognition and bullying


Essay questions: pick 2 and they need to be at least a page and a half each.

  1.  Why is play Important?  What role does it play in childhood development?
  2. What is Creativity? What can we do to foster it in children and what are the positive outcomes of creativity?
  3. How does the “self” develop throughout early, middle and late Childhood?
  4. What is morality? How does moral behavior develop?

Life Span 2-6-14

Today we will cover  chapter 5 and start Chapter 6.
next week we will finish chapter 6 and Start chapter 7.

The reason why it's broken up like this is because we are introducing and covering attachment, which is an important concept that may take a couple classes to fully explain.
